Guide
What ChatGPT Work is, and when to use it instead of Chat
ChatGPT Work is a mode in ChatGPT for handing over a whole task: you switch from Chat to Work, describe the outcome, and ChatGPT plans the steps, uses your files, plugins and approved tools, and returns a result you review, such as a deck, a spreadsheet or a recurring update. OpenAI's guide says to use Chat for questions, brainstorming and short drafts, and Work when the job has a clear outcome, several sources or steps, and an output you'll review. Its docs say Work is included in every ChatGPT plan from Free to Enterprise and shares Codex's usage limits, so longer tasks use more of your allowance. Whatever Work returns, you check it before it goes anywhere: the facts, the numbers and anything it says it did.
Short answer
- Chat for answers and short drafts.
- Work for a task with an outcome you review.
- Brief it: outcome, sources, limits, when to stop.
- Check the result before you use it.
Chat or Work
| Chat | Work | |
|---|---|---|
| Good for | A question, a brainstorm, a short draft or rewrite | A task with a clear outcome: a deck, an analysis, a report, a recurring update |
| What it uses | What you type or attach | Your files, projects, installed plugins and approved tools; on the desktop app, local files and the browser when allowed |
| What you do | Read the answer and reply | Follow progress, answer its questions, approve important actions, review the result |
| Usage | Your plan's usage | Shared with Codex; longer tasks use more |
From OpenAI's ChatGPT docs, read 5 November 2026. Availability depends on your plan, rollout and, at work, your workspace's settings.
The brief to copy
A Work task, then the check
Task, in Work: "Using [the sources], create [the outcome] for [who]. Include [what it must cover]. Use only these sources; flag anything missing instead of filling it in. Stop before [sending, booking or changing anything] and return a draft for my review."
Check, in Chat: "Review this result before I use it. Does it answer the request? List every number, date, price and claim with where it came from, mark anything that isn't in the sources, recompute every total, and give me a fix list: must fix, should fix, then a verdict."
A worked example
Illustration: a made-up business. The office manager of a 30-person architecture practice has three cleaning quotes in a folder. Company A charges 450 a week, company B 1,900 a month, company C 2,100 a month with windows cleaned quarterly. She asks Work for a spreadsheet comparing monthly price, hours, what's included and contract length, with a summary tab, and to stop before contacting anyone. The result looks finished. The check finds two must-fixes:
- Company A's monthly price is wrong: 450 × 4 = 1,800. A month is 450 × 52 ÷ 12 = 1,950, which makes B, not A, the cheapest.
- "Company B: 30 days' notice" isn't in B's quote; remove it or ask B.
Verdict: ready after the must-fixes. The summary tab had recommended A as the cheapest, so she fixes the formula, asks B about notice, and only then sends the spreadsheet to the partners.
What stays with you
- Give it the sources and tell it to use only those.
- Tell it when to stop: before sending, booking, paying or changing anything.
- Recompute the numbers and trace each claim to a source.
- Use a work account for work files, and only the plugins your company allows.
- Watch the usage on long tasks; a focused task uses less.
Next step: save the task you repeat
Once a Work task goes well, you'll want it again next month. Stop pasting the same prompt into ChatGPT every time shows where to keep the brief so you don't rewrite it.
Skills for this
- AI practiceReview an AI draft before useReviews an AI-generated draft before use: claims to verify, possibly invented sources, tone and policy issues, gaps against the request, and a fix list.
- Operations and adminVendor comparison with weighted scoresCompares 2-5 vendors on weighted criteria you agree first: must-haves, evidence-based scores, total cost, risks, and one recommendation.
- AI practiceContext brief for an AI assistantWrites instructions for an AI assistant or agent: role, audience, can and can't, sources of truth, tools, format, examples, edge cases, and handoff.
Questions
What is ChatGPT Work?
A mode in ChatGPT for delegating a task rather than asking a question. You switch from Chat to Work, describe the outcome you want, and ChatGPT plans the steps, uses your files, installed plugins and approved tools, and returns something you review: a deck, a spreadsheet, a report or a recurring update. You can follow its progress, answer its questions and approve important actions.
When should I use ChatGPT Work instead of Chat?
OpenAI's guide says to use Chat for questions, brainstorming and short drafts, and Work when a task has a clear outcome, uses several sources, tools or steps, would take real time by hand, and produces something you'll review or reuse. A quick rewrite is a Chat job; comparing three suppliers' quotes in a spreadsheet is a Work job.
Is ChatGPT Work included in my plan?
OpenAI's docs, read on 5 November 2026, say ChatGPT Work and Codex are included in the Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Edu and Enterprise plans, and that Work uses the same usage limits and credits as Codex, so long tasks use more of your allowance. What you see also depends on rollout and, at work, on your workspace's settings.
AI skill
Have your AI check an AI draft before anyone uses it
Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. Review an AI draft before use has your AI check a finished result before anyone uses it: whether it answers the request, every factual claim and where to verify it, sources or figures that may be invented, numbers that don't add up, and promises the company can't keep, as a fix list with a verdict.
