How to share ChatGPT skills without ChatGPT Business (Plus and Pro)

ChatGPT's Skills feature is only on Business, Enterprise, Healthcare, and Edu, so on Plus or Pro there is no skill to share. Instead, keep the instructions in one SKILL.md and let each person's ChatGPT reach it through a custom MCP connector: that works on Pro (read/fetch), Business, and Enterprise, and on Plus only where the plan allows custom connectors.

Short answer

  • Plus: no Skills, and OpenAI's MCP page doesn't list Plus. Paste the same text into each person's Custom Instructions or Project, or connect where your plan allows custom connectors.
  • Pro: no Skills, but custom MCP servers with read/fetch permissions. Enough to read skills from a shared pod.
  • Business and up: Skills with sharing built in, plus full custom MCP (only admins and owners create connectors on Business).

What each ChatGPT plan allows

PlanSkillsCustom MCP connector
PlusNoNot listed on OpenAI's MCP page
ProNoYes, read/fetch permissions
BusinessYes, share with people, groups, a link, or the workspace libraryYes, full; admins and owners create them
Enterprise, EduYesYes, full

From OpenAI's help pages, read on 4 November 2026. ChatGPT Business is $25 per user a month, or $20 billed annually.

Sharing gets harder on 11 December 2026, when custom GPTs retire. Plus and Pro users who sent a GPT link to clients or students lose that link; the retirement guide covers the move.

The do-it-yourself way on Plus: copy the text

  1. Write the instructions once as a SKILL.md. The SKILL.md converter turns a doc into one; the GPT to skill converter does it from a GPT's instructions.
  2. Share the file in a drive everyone can open.
  3. Each person pastes it into a ChatGPT Project's instructions, or into Custom Instructions if it should apply to every chat.

It's free and it works on every plan. It also drifts: each paste is a copy, and the next fix reaches only the people who paste again.

OpenAI's current steps for a custom MCP server, with no need to turn on Developer Mode first:

  1. Open Plugins, then "+".
  2. Choose "Add custom MCP server" and paste the server's URL.
  3. Sign in when asked, tick "I understand…", and choose "Create as a plugin".

Point that at a skill pod and ChatGPT reads the team's skills from the same place as everyone else's AI. On Business, an admin or owner adds the connector. On Plus, try these steps where your plan offers custom connectors; we don't promise Plus works until OpenAI lists it.

AI Skill Pod · free to start

Put the team's skills in one pod and send one invite link; personal emails are welcome. ChatGPT on Pro, Business, and Enterprise reaches it through a custom MCP connector or developer mode, and Claude, Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, and OpenCode through the same link. Free for up to 3 members.

When ChatGPT Business is the better answer

If everyone is an employee, works only in ChatGPT, and the company pays for seats anyway, Business gives you Skills with sharing, a workspace library, and per-skill usage for admins. ChatGPT Business skills compared has the details.

It fits less well when people sit outside the workspace: OpenAI's forum has Business owners asking how to reach clients and students who aren't members. A pod invite takes a personal email.

Questions

Can ChatGPT Plus users use a shared skill or MCP connector?

OpenAI's help page lists full custom MCP for Business and Enterprise/Edu and read/fetch MCP for Pro; it doesn't mention Plus. A Plus user can reach a shared skill pod only where their plan allows custom connectors. Until then, paste the skill's text into Custom Instructions or a Project.

How do I share custom instructions with my team in ChatGPT?

Without Business, there's no shared setting: each person pastes the same text into their own Custom Instructions or Project instructions. Keeping that text in one SKILL.md and connecting ChatGPT to it over MCP (Pro, Business, Enterprise) keeps one copy instead of many.

What replaces custom GPTs after 11 December 2026?

OpenAI moves GPTs to plugins, where a GPT's instructions become a skill. Plugins and skills sit on Business and Enterprise plans, so Plus and Pro users who shared GPTs by link need another way. See the custom GPT retirement guide.
