Guide
How to turn a support ticket into a bug report with AI
ChatGPT or Claude can turn a customer's ticket into a bug report an engineer can reproduce without reading the thread. Paste the ticket with the customer's personal details removed, plus what you tried yourself, and ask for a title that names the failure and where, numbered steps from a known start, and the expected and actual results kept apart, with error messages quoted exactly. Ask for the environment with unknowns written as "unknown", the impact with a suggested severity, and up to four questions for the customer. Guesses about the cause go under "not confirmed".
Short answer
- Steps: one action each, from a known start.
- Expected and actual, kept apart.
- Unknown stays unknown; guesses are marked.
- One failure per report, ticket IDs, no personal details.
The brief to copy
Bug report brief
"Turn this ticket into a bug report an engineer can reproduce without reading the thread.
Title: action, how it fails, where. Steps to reproduce: numbered, one action per step, starting from a known state, with the exact labels on screen in bold; mark any step the customer didn't confirm [unconfirmed]. Then Expected, then Actual, with error text quoted exactly.
Environment: browser or app version, device, plan, account (as the ticket ID), when, and how often. Write [unknown] for anything not in the ticket; never fill in a likely value. Impact: customers affected, workaround, whether money, data or security is involved, and a suggested severity with one line of reason.
End with up to 4 questions to ask the customer, most important first, and put any guess about the cause under "Notes (not confirmed)". Leave out names, emails and payment details.

A worked example
Illustration: a made-up business. An invoicing app gets ticket #4417: "The PDF of my invoice shows the WRONG total, the discount is missing!! Safari on my Mac. Three invoices this week." Support tried it on a test account: an invoice with one 500.00 line and a 10% line discount shows 450.00 on screen and 500.00 in the PDF. The report, in part:
Invoice PDF total ignores line discount
Severity (suggested): S2: the PDF a customer sends asks for more than the invoice on screen; workaround likely (send the online invoice link). [check: whether any client paid the PDF amount]
Reported by: #4417 · Customers affected: 1 · Reproduced by us: yes, 3 of 3 tries
Steps to reproduce
1. Log in to a workspace as an Admin.
2. Create an invoice with one line of 500.00.
3. Add a Line discount of 10%.
4. Click Download PDF.
Expected: the PDF total is 450.00, the same as the screen, with the discount line shown.
Actual: the screen shows "Total 450.00"; the PDF shows "Total 500.00" and no discount line.
Environment: customer on Safari, version [unknown], macOS [unknown], plan [unknown], account: see #4417. Ours: a test workspace, 3 of 3 tries.
Ask the customer: 1. Did any of the three PDFs go to your clients? 2. Which Safari version are you on? 3. Could you send one of the PDFs with your client's details removed?
Notes (not confirmed): the PDF may be built from the line totals before discounts.
The engineer reproduced it from the steps alone. The first question went to the customer in the same reply that offered the online invoice link as the workaround.
What stays with the team
- Remove names, emails and card numbers before pasting; refer to the ticket ID.
- Try to reproduce it yourself, and say "not yet reproduced" if you haven't.
- One failure per report; link the other tickets that show the same one.
- Engineering sets the final severity; the AI only suggests it.
- Send the customer questions in one reply, not one a day.
Next step: stop pasting the brief
A support team files bug reports every week, so the brief shouldn't live in someone's notes. Stop pasting the same prompt into ChatGPT every time shows where to keep it so it's there for the next ticket.

Questions
Can AI write a bug report from a support ticket?
Yes, if it only uses what's in the ticket and in your own attempt to reproduce it. Ask for numbered steps from a known start, expected and actual results kept apart, the exact error text, the environment with unknown fields marked unknown, and a short list of questions for the customer. Guesses about the cause go in a separate "not confirmed" section.
What should a bug report include?
Mozilla's guidelines ask for a clear summary, precise steps to reproduce, the expected result and the actual result, plus whatever else helps someone else see it: version, device, how often it happens. Add the impact (how many customers, whether money or data is involved) and the ticket IDs instead of the customer's personal details.
How do I stop engineers sending tickets back with "can't reproduce"?
Write steps that start from a known state and take one action each, say whether you reproduced it yourself, and write "unknown" instead of a likely browser or version. File one report per failure: WebKit's guidelines say not to put more than one bug in one report.
