ChatGPT prompt library extensions: what they do and what to check
A ChatGPT prompt library extension adds your saved prompts to chatgpt.com in Chrome, so you insert one with a click instead of copying it from a document. To work on the page, it asks for access to your data on chatgpt.com, which in Chrome's words lets it read, request or change data on those pages, your chats included. That can suit one person; for a team, a skill shared through AI Skill Pod reaches everyone's Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) from one invite link, with no extension in anyone's chats.
Short answer
- What it does: saved prompts, one click into the chat box.
- What it asks for: your data on chatgpt.com.
- Check: the site access, where prompts are kept, the maker.
- For a team: a project or a skill instead.
An extension, a project or a skill
| Prompt extension | ChatGPT project | Skill in a pod | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it keeps | Prompts you insert by hand | Instructions and files for one piece of work | A method the AI applies when a request matches |
| Who has it | Whoever installs it and holds the library | People the project is shared with | Everyone who joins the pod |
| Where it works | chatgpt.com in Chrome | ChatGPT | Claude, Cursor, ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) |
| What it can see | The pages it has access to, your chats included | Nothing extra | Only what your AI sends when it looks up or saves a skill |

Check these before you install one
- The site access it asks for. Your data on chatgpt.com is what it needs; your data on all websites is far more.
- Where the prompts are kept, in your browser or on the maker's servers, and whether you can export them.
- Who makes it, its privacy policy, and what it does with the text of your chats.
- Your company's rules on extensions. A work device may allow only approved ones.
A worked example: five people, five extensions
Illustration: a made-up business. A five-person marketing team uses ChatGPT Business, and each person installed a different prompt extension. Their product-description prompts have drifted: one adds a size chart and the others don't. The team lead:
- Collects the three prompts people use most and keeps the best version of each step.
- Writes them as one skill, with the description "Writes a product description from the spec sheet: benefit first, size chart, care notes. Use when listing a new product."
- Adds the skill to the team's pod, which the workspace admin adds to ChatGPT Business, and asks the team to remove the extensions.
Now there's one description method, and when the size chart changes she edits the skill once.

Next step: three ways to share prompts
If you're choosing how the team shares prompts, compare the options first. How to share AI prompts with your team (3 ways) sets them side by side.

Questions
Is there a prompt library extension for ChatGPT?
Yes, the Chrome Web Store has several. They add a list of saved prompts to chatgpt.com, often with folders and a button that inserts a prompt into the chat box. Where the prompts are kept, in your browser or on the maker's servers, and whether you can export them, depends on the extension.
Are ChatGPT prompt extensions safe to use?
It depends on the extension. To work on chatgpt.com it needs access to your data on that site, which Chrome describes as reading, requesting or changing data on those pages, and those pages hold your chats. Prefer one that asks for chatgpt.com only, not all websites, read its privacy policy, and check your company's rules on extensions.
How can a team share prompts in ChatGPT without an extension?
Share a project, whose instructions apply in every chat inside it, or write the prompt as a skill. ChatGPT offers skills on Business, Enterprise, Healthcare and Edu, and a skill shared through a pod reaches each person's own Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise).
AI skill
Have your AI turn a prompt that works into a skill your team can reuse
Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. Turn a prompt into a skill has your AI turn the prompts you keep in an extension into a skill, with no extension reading your chats: a valid name, a description that says when to use it, inputs, numbered steps, an output template and checks.
