ChatGPT Team (now Business) vs Plus: which does your team need?
ChatGPT Team is now called ChatGPT Business: OpenAI renamed it on 29 August 2025 without changing the plan. Choose Business over Plus when your team needs one company bill, admin control over accounts, data excluded from training by default, or skills and company tools shared across a workspace. Business costs $25 a user billed monthly or $20 billed yearly, from 2 users; Plus costs $20 a month and is one person's account. If people work alone and only need the same few instructions, Plus is enough.
Short answer
- "Team" and "Business" are the same plan. The name changed in August 2025.
- Choose Business for shared skills and connectors, admin, SSO, and no training by default.
- Stay on Plus if each person works alone and the company doesn't need to own the accounts.
- Price gap: $5 a user a month on monthly billing; none on yearly.

A worked example: a five-person marketing team
Illustration: a made-up business. A five-person marketing team at an online furniture shop each pays for Plus. Their manager wants the same brand-voice and product-description instructions used by everyone, and the finance lead wants one invoice.
- Cost now: 5 × Plus = $100 a month, on five cards.
- Business, monthly billing: 5 × $25 = $125 a month, one invoice.
- Business, yearly billing: 5 × $20 = $100 a month, $1,200 up front.
On yearly billing, Business costs what they pay now, and adds the shared skills, admin and the training default. What it doesn't fix: their copywriter is a freelancer with her own ChatGPT account. OpenAI's community forum has reports from Business owners that links to their workspace's GPTs fail for people outside the workspace, so they plan to give her a seat or share the instructions another way.
How to decide
- Does the company need to own the accounts and the bill? Yes: Business.
- Does a client or policy require that your data isn't used for training? Business excludes it by default; on Plus, each person must turn training off and keep it off.
- Do you want shared skills or a company connector in ChatGPT? That needs a workspace: Business or Enterprise.
- Do some colleagues use Claude or a coding agent, or work as freelancers? Workspace sharing won't reach them; plan for that separately.
Sharing instructions across plans and tools
OpenAI doesn't list ChatGPT Plus for custom MCP connectors. So for a team on mixed plans, one shared skill library helps only those whose AI can connect: ChatGPT Pro (read only), Business and Enterprise, every Claude plan, and coding agents such as Codex, which Plus includes. AI Skill Pod is one such library, with Free for up to 3 members and 10 skills; alternatives to ChatGPT Business compares it with the other options, and sharing ChatGPT skills without Business covers the steps.
