ChatGPT vs Claude for work: which should you use?

For most office work, ChatGPT and Claude are close enough that the right choice is the one whose drafts need fewer fixes on your own tasks. Both have free plans, both personal paid plans cost $20 a month, and both have projects, file uploads and memory. So test them side by side for an hour on three tasks from your real week, and choose by the result; if your company already pays for one, start there.

Short answer

  • Your company already pays for one: use that one; its business plan covers your data.
  • You're choosing for yourself: run the one-hour test below on both free plans.
  • You write a lot of long documents: test long files in both; that's where people notice differences.
  • Don't pay for both until you use one daily and know what the other adds.

What's the same, and what to test

On the things most office workers do, the two overlap: drafting emails and documents, summarizing long text, reading PDFs and spreadsheets you upload, brainstorming, and answering questions. Both have projects, a folder where you keep files and standing instructions for one piece of work. Both can remember things about you across chats if you let them.

Where people do notice differences is in the writing style each produces, how each handles a long document, and how each follows a detailed brief. Those depend on your task, which is why reviews online disagree. Your own test settles it in an hour.

A worked example: the one-hour test

Illustration: a made-up business. Daniel is an account manager at a 30-person print shop. His company has no AI plan yet, so he's choosing for himself. He picks three tasks from last week and writes the same brief for both AIs:

  1. A reply to a customer whose banner order arrived a day late, apologizing and offering a 10% credit.
  2. A one-page summary of a 14-page supplier price list (he removes the supplier's name first).
  3. Five questions to ask a new customer before quoting a trade-show booth.

He scores each draft out of 5 on two things only: would he send it after small fixes, and how many minutes the fixes took. Example result: one AI scores 13 and needs 11 minutes of fixes; the other scores 11 and needs 16. He keeps the first, and drops the other. The scores would differ for someone else's tasks, which is the point.

How to run your own test

  1. Pick three tasks you did last week: one email, one summary, one thinking task.
  2. Remove anything confidential: customer names, prices you agreed, personal details.
  3. Write one brief per task and paste the same brief into both free plans.
  4. Score each draft: would you send it after fixes (1 to 5), and minutes of fixing.
  5. Choose the higher total and use it for a week before paying for anything.

When the choice is already made for you

If your company pays for ChatGPT Business or Claude Team, use that account for work. On those plans, what you type isn't used to train the models by default, and your company's admin controls apply. On personal plans you choose whether your chats help train the models, so check that setting first; what not to paste into AI at work covers it.

Once you've chosen, the next question is how to stop re-typing your instructions. Claude Projects, explained for work shows the first fix, and custom instructions vs Projects vs skills compares all three in both AIs.
