Claude skills for consultants: the five to set up first

The Claude skills a consultant or small consultancy gets most from are five: a check of each proposal before it goes out, a kickoff brief, meeting minutes with owners and dates, a weekly client report, and a decision memo that leads with the recommendation. Each is a short set of instructions Claude loads when your request matches its description, filled with your own templates, one good example and the phrases you never use with clients. Write each once and share it through AI Skill Pod, and your associates and subcontractors get the same version in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) from one invite link, so every client gets one standard of work.

Short answer

  • Proposal check: before each proposal goes out.
  • Kickoff brief: at the start of each engagement.
  • Minutes and weekly report: every week.
  • Decision memo: for each recommendation.

The five skills

SkillYou askPut in from your practice
Proposal check"Check this proposal before I send it"What a winning proposal of yours contains; how you price
Kickoff brief"Kickoff brief for the pricing project"Your one-page format; one success measure; scope in and out
Meeting minutes"Minutes from today's steering call"Decisions, owners and dates; what you never write down
Weekly client report"Weekly report for Arden Foods"Your status scale, length, what goes to the client sponsor
Decision memo"Memo recommending option B"Recommendation first, options with trade-offs, the evidence you cite

A worked example: a two-partner consultancy

Illustration: a made-up business. A pricing consultancy has two partners and works with four freelance associates on bigger projects. Each associate used to send weekly reports in a different shape.

  1. The partners write the weekly-report and minutes skills from their three best client reports.
  2. They put both in the consultancy's pod and send the associates the invite link; two use Claude, two use ChatGPT Business at their own firms.
  3. At the end of a project they remove the associate from the pod, and the skills stay with the consultancy.

AI Skill Pod is this site's product. You can start on Free at $0, with no card, for up to 3 people and 10 skills; after the 14-day trial, your team stays on Free unless you buy Team ($5 per seat a month from 3 seats) or Business.

Set them up

  1. Check your client contracts for limits on where their information can go.
  2. Pick the first skill that touches clients most often.
  3. Gather your template and one good example, with client names removed.
  4. Write the skill with a description in your words under 200 characters, and test it on a past engagement.

Next step: get the whole team on the same version

Once associates and subcontractors join, the question is how they all get the same version: the best ways to share AI skills with a team compares the options.

Questions

What Claude skills should a consultant set up first?

Usually five: a proposal check, a kickoff brief, meeting minutes, a weekly client report and a decision memo. Start with the one that touches clients most often, usually the weekly report or the minutes.

Can I use Claude with client data as a consultant?

Check your client contracts first; many limit where their information can go. On Claude Team or Enterprise, Anthropic doesn't train on your chats by default; on personal plans, training is on until you opt out. Keep the method in skills and the client's files out of personal accounts.

How do associates and subcontractors use the same skills?

Share the skills through a pod: each associate joins from an invite link and gets them in their own Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise), and you remove a subcontractor when the engagement ends.

AI skill
