Claude skills vs MCP: what each does, and when you need both

MCP and skills answer different questions. MCP, the Model Context Protocol, is an open standard for connecting Claude to outside tools and data: a help desk, a drive, a database. A skill is a folder of instructions that teaches Claude how to do one task, loaded only when the task comes up. Anthropic's help puts it simply: MCP gives Claude access to tools, and skills teach Claude how to use those tools well. Most teams start with skills, which need nothing connected, and add a connector when a skill needs live data from another system. Review every connector before the team uses it, tool by tool, because it can read and change data elsewhere.

Short answer

  • MCP: access to tools and data.
  • Skill: how to do a task.
  • Together: the connector fetches, the skill says what to do.
  • Review connectors tool by tool before connecting.

A worked example: replies from the help desk

Illustration: a made-up business. A support team already has a reply-tone skill. To stop pasting tickets in, the lead wants Claude to read them from the help desk through its MCP connector, and reviews the connector first:

ToolTypeSetting
search_ticketsReadAllow
get_ticketReadAllow
add_internal_noteWriteAsk every time
send_replyWriteOff: agents send replies themselves
delete_ticketWriteOff: the job doesn't need it

Publisher: the help desk's own official server. Sign-in: each agent's own account, so each sees only their queue. Decision: connect with conditions, with send and delete off and a review in 90 days. Now an agent asks for "a reply to ticket 4812": the connector fetches the ticket, the skill writes the reply in the team's tone, and the agent reads it and sends it.

Choose

  1. Start with a skill if the task works on what people can paste or upload.
  2. Add a connector when the skill needs live data from another system.
  3. Review the connector tool by tool, and turn off any write the job doesn't need.
  4. Keep the method in the skill, not in each person's prompt.

Next step: sharing both with the team

Skills and connectors both need to reach everyone the same way. The cheapest way to share AI prompts with a small team compares the options, and serving skills over MCP to Claude Desktop shows the two working together.

Questions

What's the difference between Claude skills and MCP?

MCP connects Claude to outside tools and data, such as a help desk, a drive or a database. A skill is a set of instructions that teaches Claude how to do one task. Anthropic's help puts it this way: MCP gives Claude access to tools, and skills teach Claude how to use those tools effectively.

Do I need MCP to use skills?

No. A skill works on its own with whatever is in the chat: pasted text, uploaded files. You add a connector when the skill needs live data from another system, such as the ticket it should reply to.

Is a skill or an MCP server riskier?

Both need checking. A connector can read or change data in another system, so review its tools and set approvals for anything that writes. A skill can include scripts that run when Claude uses it, so read it before installing.

AI skill

Have your AI check a connector before your team adds it

Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. Review an MCP connector before connecting has your AI review an MCP server or connector before the team connects it: who runs it, every tool sorted read, write or run, sign-in and scope, where the data goes, approvals for each write, and a decision.
