Guide
How to share a Gemini Gem with your team, and what changes on 17 November
Yes: in gemini.google.com, click Share next to the Gem and add people as Viewer (they use it) or Editor (they can also change or delete it), or copy a link. On personal Google accounts that works only until 17 November 2026, when every Gem becomes a skill and turns read-only, and Google says sharing skills inside Gemini arrives "in the coming weeks"; work and school accounts keep Gems until 2027 and follow the admin's Drive sharing settings. To keep one shared copy past 17 November, share the skill instead: through AI Skill Pod, everyone on the team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) from one invite link, and teammates who stay in Gemini upload its SKILL.md.
Short answer
- Share: Viewer to use it, Editor to change it.
- Personal accounts: read-only from 17 November.
- Work accounts: Gems until 2027; the admin decides.
- After that: share the skill it becomes.
Share a Gem in four steps
- Open your Gems. At gemini.google.com, click Open Sidebar, then Gems.
- Click Share next to the Gem.
- Add each person by email and choose Viewer or Editor. You can add an expiration date, and untick Notify people if you don't want an email sent.
- Share its files too when Gemini asks, as Viewer, Commenter or Editor. Anyone with access to the Gem can read its instructions and files, so don't share it with someone who shouldn't see them.
To send a link instead, click Share, then Copy link. People still need access: add them by email, or change the Gem's general access.
Who can do what
| Access | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Viewer | Use the Gem and see its instructions and files |
| Editor | Also change its instructions and files, share it with others, and delete it |
| Anyone with the link, or Public | Use it without signing in; personal accounts only, and often missing on work or school accounts |
| Your organization | Anyone signed in to your work or school organization can open it |
From Google's Gemini Apps Help, read 5 November 2026. Shared Gems are saved in a new Google Drive folder, and you can transfer ownership to someone who already has access.
Why you can't share a Gem
- A file Gemini can't share. A shared Gem can only use files from your device or Google Drive, and a NotebookLM notebook can't be its source. Any other file in Knowledge hides the Share option.
- Your admin turned it off. On work and school accounts, Gem sharing follows your organization's Drive sharing settings, and the Workspace admin can turn it on or off.
- It's read-only. On a personal account from 17 November 2026, nobody can use or edit a Gem, shared or not.
What changes on 17 November
| Account | What happens |
|---|---|
| Personal, 18 and over | 17 November 2026: each Gem becomes a skill and turns read-only. 17 December 2026: Gems are removed. |
| Personal, under 18 | Later; Google hasn't given a date |
| Workspace business, enterprise, non-profit | March 2027 |
| Workspace education | June 2027 |
Google recreates each Gem as a skill for you, but you can't share that skill yet: sharing skills with others is one of the features Google says arrive in the coming weeks. Its help doesn't say what people you shared a Gem with get. So a team on personal accounts that shares Gems today has a gap from 17 November until then.
A worked example: one shared Gem, five people
Illustration: a made-up business. Larch Bookkeeping has five people on personal Google accounts. The owner, Sofia, shares a Gem for month-end client emails: three staff as Viewers and her senior bookkeeper as Editor. Before 17 November she:
- Checks the Gem's files. One is a .xls template, which won't move to a skill, so she saves it again as .xlsx.
- Puts the template in the firm's shared Drive folder and links it in the Gem's instructions, because the pod keeps a skill's instructions, not its files.
- Recreates the Gem as a skill and downloads the skill's .zip.
- Adds the skill to the team's pod, so she and one staff member, who work in Claude, and the staff member on the firm's ChatGPT Business get the same copy; the firm's ChatGPT admin adds the pod first.
- Sends the .zip to the senior bookkeeper and the third staff member, who stay in Gemini and upload it as their own skill.
When the Gem turns read-only on 17 November, nothing breaks for the team. When a client's year-end moves, Sofia changes the skill in the pod once and sends the two Gemini users the new SKILL.md the same day.
Share it as a skill in AI Skill Pod
Put the skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on the team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise), from one invite link and free to start.
- Add the skill. In the app, click Add a skill, then under Move from a GPT or a file, choose the skill's SKILL.md or .zip (up to 2 MB) and click Read the file. Check the name and description, then click Save for the team. The pod keeps the instructions, not the skill's files, so keep templates and other files in a shared Drive folder and link them in the instructions.
- Invite the team. Under Invite your team, send the link. Any email address works, contractors included.
- Everyone connects their own AI. In Claude, add the pod as a custom connector; in Cursor, click Add to Cursor under Connect your AI. In ChatGPT, the pod works on Pro, Business or Enterprise; on Business and Enterprise, an admin or owner adds it first. AI Skill Pod's Connect your AI steps don't cover Gemini yet: Google lets US personal accounts add a custom MCP server under Settings › Connected Apps, in English only, but we haven't tested the pod there. Until then, teammates in Gemini upload the skill, and upload it again after a change.
AI Skill Pod is this site's product. Pod pricing: Free up to 3 members and 10 skills; Team $5 per seat a month from 3 seats.
Next step: move your Gems before 17 November
Each Gem needs its files checked and a skill made before it turns read-only. Move Gemini Gems to skills before 17 November walks through the three steps and the files that don't carry over. To turn a Gem into a SKILL.md you can add to the pod, paste it into the free Gemini Gem to skill converter.

Questions
Can you share a Gemini Gem?
Yes. In gemini.google.com, open Gems, click Share next to the Gem, and add people as Viewer, who can use it and see its instructions, or Editor, who can also change, share or delete it. You can also copy a link. On personal Google accounts this works until 17 November 2026, when Gems turn into read-only skills.
Why can't I share my Gem?
Usually one of three reasons. The Gem has a file Gemini can't share, such as a NotebookLM notebook or a file that isn't from your device or Google Drive. On a work or school account, your admin has turned Gem sharing off or limits it through Drive's sharing settings. Or, on a personal account from 17 November 2026, the Gem is read-only.
How do I share Gems with my team after 17 November?
Share the skill the Gem becomes. Google says sharing skills inside Gemini arrives in the coming weeks. Until then, put the skill in a skill pod such as AI Skill Pod, and everyone on the team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business or Enterprise) from one invite link; teammates who stay in Gemini upload its SKILL.md.
AI skill
Have your AI turn a prompt that works into a skill your team can reuse
Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. Paste a Gem's name, description and instructions, and Turn a prompt into a skill has your AI rewrite them as a skill: a description that says when to use it, numbered steps and checks, ready to share with the team.
