Guide
Objection handling with ChatGPT: prepare before the call
ChatGPT or Claude is useful for objection handling before the call, not during it. Give it the objections you expect (price, timing, a competitor, "send me some info") and what the buyer has told you so far, and ask for each one in the same four steps: acknowledge it in one sentence without arguing; ask one question to find what's really behind it; answer that, tied to something the buyer said they need; and confirm with a check like "Does that answer it?". Gong's research found the best reps pause and ask before they answer, while average reps answer the wrong issue. Keep any discount for last, and only in exchange for something. Then practise the lines out loud.
Short answer
- Prepare before the call, not during it.
- Four steps: acknowledge, ask, respond, confirm.
- Answer the real objection, in the buyer's terms.
- Discount last, and only in a trade.
The brief to copy
Objection prep brief
"Prepare me for these objections on tomorrow's call.
For each: say what kind it is (price, timing, competitor, send me info, security, authority, status quo). Then four short lines I can say, each under 20 seconds: acknowledge it without agreeing or arguing; ask one question to find what's behind it; respond to the real issue, tied to what the buyer told us; confirm and propose one next step.
Never offer a discount first. If price comes up, offer to change scope before price, and any concession must be in exchange for something.
What the buyer has told us: [paste]. Objections I expect: [list]"
A worked example
Illustration: a made-up business. A rep sells scheduling software to a group of three physiotherapy clinics. The practice manager said on the last call that the front desk loses about ten hours a week to booking calls, and the rep expects "it's more than we budgeted". The prep:
Price objection, four lines
Acknowledge: "That's fair to raise. It's a real number."
Ask: "More than you budgeted for this, or more than another quote you've seen?"
Respond (if it's the budget): "You mentioned about ten hours a week at the front desk on booking calls. If we start with two clinics and add the third next quarter, does that fit this year's budget?"
Confirm: "Does that answer it, or is there something else behind it? If it works, could we look at the two-clinic plan on Thursday?"
The rep checks with the sales manager that a two-clinic start is allowed before the call, and practises the four lines twice. No discount is in the plan; the trade, if one comes, would be a longer term.
Before the call
- Use the buyer's own words and numbers, from your notes.
- Check every option you offer (a smaller start, a phased plan) is one you can give.
- Practise out loud; lines read from a screen sound read.
- Keep customer details on the company's account; on a personal plan, turn off model training first.
- Save the brief for the next call.
Next step: save the brief
A brief you use before every call should live where you can reuse it. ChatGPT prompts for sales, saved shows where to keep it with the other sales prompts. For the questions to ask earlier in the deal, see sales call prep with ChatGPT.
Skills for this
- SalesObjection handlingDrafts replies to price, timing, competitor, security and "send me info" objections: acknowledge, clarify, respond, confirm. Never discounts first.
- SalesDiscovery call prepBuilds a one-page discovery call prep from the prospect's website, LinkedIn and notes: hypotheses, 8 ranked questions, what to qualify, red flags.
- SalesCompetitor battlecardBuilds a one-page battlecard against one rival: when we win and lose, their strengths, landmine questions, what not to say, and an honest comparison.
- SalesDeal review with MEDDICC or BANTScores a deal against MEDDICC or BANT from the buyer's own words, lists each gap with a next action, and suggests a forecast category.
Questions
Can ChatGPT help with sales objection handling?
Yes, to prepare before a call. Give it the objections you expect and what the buyer has told you, and ask for each one: acknowledge it in one sentence, ask one question to find what's behind it, answer the real issue in the buyer's own terms, and confirm. Practise the lines out loud; don't read them from the screen.
How do you handle a price objection?
Don't answer it straight away. Acknowledge it, then ask what it's being compared with: the budget, another quote, or the value. Restate the cost of the problem in the buyer's own numbers, and offer to change the scope before the price. A discount comes last, and only in exchange for something.
Should I let AI reply to objections by email?
Draft with it, then send it yourself. Keep it short, end with one question, and check every number and promise in it against what you can actually offer.
