ChatGPT prompts for freelancers, and where to save them
The prompts worth saving as a freelancer are the four you repeat with every client: a proposal from the client's brief, a scope that says what's included and what isn't, a polite reminder for an unpaid invoice, and a short weekly update. Copy them below, add one or two of your own past examples, and save them where your AI reads them on its own: your services and voice in custom instructions, each client in its own project, and each task you repeat across clients as a skill. Then you ask for "a proposal for this brief" instead of pasting a page of rules.
Short answer
- Four prompts: proposal, scope, invoice reminder, weekly update.
- Make them yours: add your past examples and rules.
- Save them: voice in custom instructions, clients in projects, tasks as skills.
- Check your contract before pasting a client's brief.
The four prompts
1. Proposal
"From this brief, write a one-page proposal: the client's goal in their words, what I'll deliver, three milestones with dates, my price as [fixed fee or day rate], and one question I need answered before starting. Here are two proposals that won work: [paste]. Brief: [paste]."
2. Scope with what's not included
"Turn what we agreed into a scope: deliverables, number of revision rounds, what the client provides and by when, and at least three things that are not included. Agreed points: [paste]."
3. Invoice reminder
"Write a short, friendly reminder that invoice [number] for [amount] was due on [date]. Restate the payment details and ask when I can expect payment. No apologies, no threats. Under 80 words."
4. Weekly client update
"From my notes, write this week's update: done, next, anything I need from the client by a date. Three short sections, under 120 words. Notes: [paste]."
Where to save each
| What | Where | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Your services, voice, rules | Custom instructions | Applied in every chat |
| One client's brief, notes, files | A project per client | Instructions and files apply only inside it |
| A task you repeat for every client | A skill | Loaded when you ask for that task |

A worked example: the proposal as a skill
Illustration: a made-up business. Lena is a freelance copywriter who writes about four proposals a month and pasted the proposal prompt, two old proposals and her rules each time. She turns it into a skill:
- Name:
client-proposal. - Description: "Writes a one-page proposal from a client's brief, in Lena's format. Use when a client sends a brief and asks for a proposal, a quote or a price."
- Steps: the client's goal in their words; deliverables; three dated milestones; the price line; one open question. Plus the correction she kept giving: "never promise unlimited revisions; say two rounds".
- Template and one example: her best proposal, with the client's name removed.
- Checks: the goal uses words from the brief; every milestone has a date; the price matches what she entered; revisions say two rounds.
She tests it on three real briefs, including a vague one, and fixes the skill where the draft went wrong. Now she pastes only the brief.
Save your first prompt
- Pick the prompt you paste most, usually the proposal.
- Add your template and two good examples, with client names removed.
- Move your services and voice to custom instructions.
- Save the task as a skill and test it on three real inputs.
- Check your contracts for what client information you may paste; see what not to paste.
Next step: tell clients how you use AI
Once AI is part of how you work, clients will ask about it, and some contracts already do. What to tell clients about your AI use gives a one-page note to send before work starts. For why saving beats pasting, see stop pasting the same prompt.

Questions
What are good ChatGPT prompts for freelancers?
The ones for writing you repeat with every client: a proposal from the client's brief, a scope that says what's included and what isn't, a polite invoice reminder, and a short weekly update. Give each your own past examples so the result sounds like you.
Where should a freelancer save ChatGPT prompts?
Your services, voice and rules in custom instructions; each client's brief and notes in a project for that client; and each task you repeat for every client, like the proposal, as a skill that loads when you ask for it.
Can I paste a client's brief into ChatGPT?
Check your contract first: many restrict sharing client information. Never paste confidential details into a personal account without turning off training, and leave out anything the client marked confidential.
AI skill
Have your AI turn a prompt that works into a skill your team can reuse
Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. Turn a prompt into a skill has your AI turn the prompt you paste most into a skill: a clear name, a description that says when to use it, the steps and corrections you keep giving, a template and one example.
