Guide
Claude for accounting firms: client data, the right plan and the first skills
Before client work goes into Claude, an accounting firm puts it on a business plan such as Claude Team, which Anthropic doesn't train on by default, turns off feedback ratings, and checks its confidentiality rules with counsel; in the US, tax return information falls under IRC section 7216, which limits what a preparer discloses and uses. Whether client data may go in at all is for those rules and counsel to decide, and personal plans, which train on chats until each person opts out, are no place for client files either way. The firm's methods, such as the close checklist and client replies, belong in skills with no client data in them, which AI Skill Pod shares to every staff member's and partner's Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) from one invite link.
Short answer
- Plan: Claude Team or Enterprise, no training by default.
- Settings: turn off feedback ratings.
- Rules: check confidentiality; in the US, IRC §7216.
- Skills: hold the method, not client files.
Before client data goes in
- Put client work on a business plan. Claude Team and Enterprise aren't trained on by default; personal plans are, until each person opts out.
- Switch off Rate chats in Organization settings > Data and Privacy, so no client conversation leaves as feedback.
- Check your confidentiality rules. In the US, IRC §7216 limits disclosing and using tax return information, and its regulations require the taxpayer's consent for some disclosures, such as to someone outside the United States. Ask your tax counsel how AI tools fit.
- Write down what never goes in, such as full taxpayer identification numbers, in the firm's AI rules.

The first skills for a firm
| Skill | Staff ask | Put in from the firm |
|---|---|---|
| Month-end close checklist | "Close checklist for Harbor Bakery, October" | Your tasks, owners and deadlines by business day |
| Client question reply | "Reply to this client's question about sales tax on deposits" | Your tone, what you never advise by email, when to book a call |
| Invoice check | "Check these supplier invoices against the POs" | What counts as a mismatch, who approves |
| Payment reminder | "Second reminder for the overdue invoice" | Your stages and wording, when to stop work |
| Variance note | "Explain this month's variances for the client" | Your thresholds and how you word causes |
A worked example: an eight-person firm
Illustration: a made-up business. An eight-person bookkeeping and tax firm in the US moves its client work onto Claude Team. The managing partner:
- Turns off Rate chats and asks the firm's counsel how its §7216 consent forms should cover AI tools.
- Writes the close checklist and client-reply skills from the firm's own procedures, with no client names in them.
- Puts both in the firm's pod, so the outsourced payroll partner, which works in its own ChatGPT Business workspace, follows the same method, and every change reaches both firms at once.

Questions
Can accounting firms use Claude with client data?
That's for your confidentiality rules and counsel to decide, not this page. What the plan changes: Anthropic doesn't train on Claude Team or Enterprise chats by default, and an Owner can switch off feedback ratings. In the US, tax return information falls under IRC section 7216, which limits disclosure and use. Personal accounts train on chats until each person opts out, so client data stays out of them.
Does IRC section 7216 apply to using AI tools?
It applies to tax return information a preparer discloses or uses, and its regulations allow some disclosures and require the taxpayer's consent for others, such as to someone outside the United States. Whether and how an AI tool fits is a question for your tax counsel, not this page.
What should an accounting firm put in Claude skills?
The methods every staff member repeats: the month-end close checklist, the reply to a client's question in the firm's tone, invoice checks, payment reminders and variance notes. Skills hold the method, not client files.
