Claude skills for finance: the five to set up first
The Claude skills a small finance team gets most from are five: a budget variance note, a month-end close checklist, an invoice check against the purchase order, a payment reminder, and a monthly KPI summary. Each skill holds your method (thresholds, format, owners, tone) and Claude loads it when someone asks for that task; the month's figures go in a project, and your books stay the source of every number. Start with the variance note, the one leadership reads.
Short answer
- Close: month-end checklist, invoice check.
- Report: variance note, KPI summary.
- Collect: payment reminder.
- Skills hold the method; projects hold the month; the books hold the numbers.
The five skills
| Skill | The ask | Put in from your team |
|---|---|---|
| Budget variance note | "Variance note for October" | Materiality threshold; the drivers you use; a past note leadership liked |
| Month-end close checklist | "Close checklist for November" | Tasks, owners, business-day deadlines |
| Invoice check | "Check this invoice against the PO" | What must match; who approves exceptions |
| Payment reminder | "Reminder for invoice 1043, 20 days late" | Your tone at 7, 30 and 60 days; how to pay |
| Monthly KPI summary | "KPI summary for the board" | The five numbers that matter; targets |
A worked month end
Illustration: a made-up business. Lucia runs finance at a 40-person online retailer, with a part-time bookkeeper and the operations manager owning a few close tasks. October's close:
- Day 1: "Close checklist for October" in the October project. The skill lists 23 tasks with owners and days; she ticks them off.
- Day 3: three supplier invoices don't match purchase orders. "Check this invoice against the PO" on each: one is a price increase nobody approved, flagged to purchasing.
- Day 5: "Variance note for October, table below." Two lines pass the 5% and €3,000 threshold: shipping (unfavourable, price: carrier surcharge) and marketing (favourable, timing: a campaign moved to November).
- Day 6: "KPI summary for the board." One page, five numbers, built from the figures she pasted.
She checks every figure against the ledger before anything leaves finance. The close used to run into the second week of the month; now it's done on day six.
Set them up
- Start with the variance note: your threshold, your drivers, two past notes.
- Add the close checklist from your current list, with owners and days.
- Create a project per month or entity for the figures.
- Follow the data rules: company account; client and supplier identifiers swapped for labels where needed. See what finance can put into AI.
- Test each on last month and compare with what you sent.

Questions
What Claude skills are useful for finance?
Five cover most of a small team's month: a budget variance note, a month-end close checklist, an invoice check against the purchase order, a payment reminder, and a monthly KPI summary. Each holds your method and thresholds; the numbers come from your books.
Can a Claude skill do accounting calculations?
Claude can read spreadsheets, and Anthropic ships a skill for Excel files. Still let your accounting system and spreadsheets be the source of every number, and have a person check any figure before it's reported.
Where should a month's figures go: a skill or a project?
A project for that month or entity. The skill holds the method, such as your materiality threshold and format, which doesn't change month to month.
