Guide
Gemini Gems vs ChatGPT Projects: which to use for what
A Gemini Gem is a custom version of Gemini for one task you repeat, such as writing proposals, while a ChatGPT project holds one piece of work, such as a client or a launch, with its chats, instructions and files together. So use a project for work that goes on over many chats and depends on the same files, and use a Gem, or now a skill, for a method you apply across all your work. On personal Google accounts Gems turn into read-only skills on 17 November 2026, while ChatGPT projects carry on, and the skill a Gem becomes can be shared with the team through AI Skill Pod, which reaches everyone's Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) from one invite link.
Short answer
- Gem: one task you repeat.
- ChatGPT project: one piece of work, with its files.
- Gems become skills on 17 November on personal accounts.
- Projects carry on.
Side by side
| Gemini Gem | ChatGPT project | |
|---|---|---|
| What it's for | A task you repeat, or an area you want expert help in | Work that continues over time, produces more than one output, or uses the same files |
| What it holds | A name, instructions, knowledge files | Chats, project instructions, files and connected sources |
| How you use it | Open the Gem, then chat | Start a chat inside the project |
| Sharing | Viewer or Editor, a link, or general access | Chat or edit access, to people you invite or anyone with the link |

A worked example: one freelancer, both tools
Illustration: a made-up business. A freelance copywriter keeps a "Proposal writer" Gem and a ChatGPT project for each of her three regular clients, with their brand guides and past drafts. She:
- Keeps the projects as they are, since each holds one client's files and chats.
- Rewrites the Gem as a skill before 17 November, with the description "Drafts a project proposal from a client brief: scope, timeline, price and next step. Use when a client asks for a proposal."
- Uses the skill in her chats: she adds it to her pod and connects her ChatGPT Pro to it, so the method is there in her chats, including those in each client's project.
AI Skill Pod is this site's product. Pod pricing: Free up to 3 members and 10 skills; Team $5 per seat a month from 3 seats.
Choose in three questions
- Is it one client, case or launch? A ChatGPT project.
- Is it a way of working you use on every client? A skill, which is what a Gem becomes.
- Do teammates need it too? Share the project with them, and share the skill through a pod so it reaches each person's own AI.
Next step: share Gems with the team
If teammates use your Gems today, the sharing changes on 17 November. Share Gemini Gems with a team covers how it works now and after.

Questions
Is a Gemini Gem the same as a ChatGPT project?
No. A Gem is a custom version of Gemini for one task you repeat, such as writing proposals, and you open it whenever you do that task. A ChatGPT project holds one piece of work, such as a client or a launch: its chats, instructions and files together. Gems are closer to custom GPTs than to projects.
What replaces Gemini Gems?
Skills. On personal Google accounts, Google turns each Gem into a skill and makes the Gem read-only on 17 November 2026; Workspace accounts follow in 2027. A skill needs no opening: Gemini applies it in any chat when the request matches.
Can you share a ChatGPT project with a team?
Yes. OpenAI's help says you can share a project with chat or edit access, either with people you invite or with anyone who has the link, subject to your workspace's settings. Everyone in it works from the same instructions and files.
AI skill
Have your AI turn a prompt that works into a skill your team can reuse
Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. Turn a prompt into a skill has your AI turn the method you keep repeating, from a Gem or a project's instructions, into a skill: a valid name, a description that says when to use it, numbered steps, an output template and checks.
