How to plan a month of marketing content with ChatGPT

To plan a month of marketing content with ChatGPT, give it three things it can't guess: your goals for the month, how many hours you really have each week, and the dates that are fixed (a launch, an event, a season). Ask for one main piece a week, each cut into two to four smaller posts, with the fixed dates placed first and a goal, an owner and a status on every row. Plan to about 80% of your hours, so one bad week doesn't break the month.

Short answer

  • Give it: goals, real hours per week, fixed dates.
  • Ask for: one main piece a week, two to four pieces cut from each.
  • Every row: a goal, an owner by name, a status.
  • Plan to 80% of your hours.

The brief to copy

Content plan brief

"Plan four weeks of marketing content for [business], starting [date].

Goals: [one or two, e.g. 40 newsletter sign-ups, 10 workshop bookings].

Hours: [n] a week, so plan no more than 80% of that. Rough costs: article 6 hours, newsletter 3, social post 1, a post cut from an article 0.5.

Fixed dates: [launch, event, season].

One main piece a week. Cut each into two to four smaller pieces before inventing new ones. Put fixed dates in first. Each row: piece, channel, publish date, goal, owner, status (idea). List weeks that are short on hours."

A worked example

Illustration: a made-up business. Noor runs a small pottery studio and does the marketing herself, five hours a week, so she plans to four. Her goals: 30 newsletter sign-ups and 12 bookings for the spring workshop on 22 March. The plan ChatGPT returns:

WeekMain piece (hours)Cut from itGoal
1Newsletter: what beginners make in their first class (3)Two posts: three first pots, a beginner's quote (1)Sign-ups
2Newsletter: choosing your first glaze (3)Two posts: glaze tiles, a student's question (1)Sign-ups
3Workshop announcement, one week before (3)Two posts: the date and how to book, what you'll take home (1)Bookings
4Newsletter with workshop photos, within three days (3)Two posts: one from the studio on the day, a thank-you with the next date (1)Bookings for the next workshop

Every row has Noor as owner and starts as "idea". Each week comes to four hours, exactly her budget, so the plan flags that there's no slack, and that the workshop photos depend on students agreeing to be photographed. She keeps a repost ready for a busy week, and asks students for consent on the booking form.

Check before you commit

  1. The hours add up to no more than 80% of what you have.
  2. Fixed dates are in, with the announcement before and the follow-up after.
  3. Every row has a goal; cut any that doesn't.
  4. Every row has a person, never "marketing".

Next step: keep the brief

You'll plan again next month with the same brief. Marketing prompts, saved shows where to keep it, with your voice, so the next plan starts from your standard. For the writing itself, see Claude skills for marketing.

Questions

Can ChatGPT make a content calendar?

Yes, if you give it what it can't guess: your goals, how many hours you really have each week, and the dates that are fixed. Ask for one main piece a week, each cut into a few smaller posts, with a goal and an owner on every row.

How much content should a small team plan?

Plan to about 80% of the hours you have, so a sick day doesn't break the month. For one person with five hours a week, that's usually one main piece and two or three posts cut from it.

What should every row in a content calendar have?

The piece, the channel, the publish date, the goal it serves, one owner by name, and a status. If you can't name the goal, cut the piece.
