Can you use Claude Pro or ChatGPT Plus for work? What the terms say
Neither Anthropic's Consumer Terms (Claude Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, and Claude Code signed in with them) nor OpenAI's Terms of Use (ChatGPT Free, Go, Plus and Pro) has a clause against using them for your job, and both hand you their rights in what the AI writes. What you don't get is the business contract: on personal plans your chats can train the models until you turn that off, nobody else may use your account, and no data processing addendum is part of the terms. Claude Team and Enterprise run on Anthropic's Commercial Terms, which say Anthropic may not train on customer content, and ChatGPT Business and Enterprise on OpenAI's Services Agreement, which says OpenAI won't use customer content to improve its services unless the customer agrees. This page reports what the terms say and where; it isn't legal advice.
Short answer
- Work use: no clause against it in either consumer contract.
- Training: on, until you switch it off.
- The account: one person's only.
- Business terms: no training on customer content, and a DPA.

Read 6 November 2026 on anthropic.com, and on openai.com through archived copies of 4 and 5 November, because openai.com refuses automated reads. Claude Team and Enterprise appear by name in Anthropic's Service Specific Terms (Claude for Work), which supplement the Commercial Terms, and Claude Code's legal page lists the Commercial Terms for Team and Enterprise.
Claude Pro, and Claude Code on Pro, at work
- Which contract. The Consumer Terms govern "Claude.ai, Claude Pro, and other products and services that we may offer for individuals", and say the Commercial Terms don't include "Claude.ai or Claude Pro use for individuals or entities".
- The one "non-commercial" line is about evaluation: when Anthropic lets you try the services for a limited time or with limited functionality, that use is "for your personal, non-commercial use only".
- Claude Code follows the plan you sign in with: the Consumer Terms for Free, Pro, Max and Ultra, the Commercial Terms for Team, Enterprise and the Claude API. Anthropic adds that the advertised Pro, Max and Ultra usage limits "assume ordinary, individual usage".
- The account is yours alone. You may not share your login or make your account available to anyone else.
- A work email can link your account to the organization's Anthropic enterprise account, after notice, and its administrator may then see your chats.
- Anthropic's help calls Pro a plan "for individual consumers" and points an organization that wants Claude with a team to Team and Enterprise.
ChatGPT Plus at work
- Which contract. The Terms of Use cover "ChatGPT, DALL·E, and OpenAI's other services for individuals". The Business Terms cover ChatGPT Enterprise, the APIs and "other services for businesses and developers", and the Services Agreement names ChatGPT Business too.
- The terms cover use on behalf of a business: "If you create an account or use the Services on behalf of another person or entity, you must have the authority to accept these Terms on their behalf." A business or organization using it indemnifies OpenAI against third-party claims.
- The account is yours alone: "You may not share your account credentials or make your account available to anyone else."
- A corporate email can move the account into the organization's business account, after notice, and its administrator then controls it.
Turn training off on a personal plan
- Claude: Settings, then Privacy, and turn the model improvement setting off. New chats and coding sessions, and the stored ones, then stay out of future training runs. With it on, de-identified data can be kept for up to 5 years.
- ChatGPT: Settings, then Data controls, turn off Improve the model for everyone, and select Done. On Free, Plus and Pro it's on by default, and the same switch covers Codex tasks.
- For one sensitive question, use Claude's Incognito chat or ChatGPT's Temporary Chat; neither is used for training.
Ratings still count on Claude: a chat you send with thumbs up or down is kept for up to 5 years and may be used for training.
A worked example: the agency that wrote down which accounts count
Illustration: a made-up business. Linden Translations is a small translation agency. Four translators pay for their own Claude Pro and the office manager uses ChatGPT Plus. A new client's contract says its documents must not be used to train third-party models, so the owner, Dana, gives the ai-use-policy-draft skill:
Tools: Claude Pro (four translators, own accounts), ChatGPT Plus (office manager). Data: client manuscripts, unreleased product manuals, invoices. One client contract: client documents must not be used to train third-party models. Policy owner: Dana.
The skill's draft begins:
# Linden Translations AI use policy
*Draft for legal review. Not legal advice. Version 1, 6 November 2026. Owner: Dana.*
## Why this policy
Our translators use AI on client documents every day. These rules keep client documents out of model training and out of accounts the agency can't see.
## Approved tools
| Tool | Plan | Approved for | Data used for training? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Claude | Pro, personal account | Glossaries, terminology checks, first drafts; no unreleased client manuals | Yes unless model improvement is off: Settings > Privacy |
| ChatGPT | Plus, personal account | Invoices and admin text without client names | Yes unless Improve the model for everyone is off |
Anything not listed: not approved for company data. Request a tool: ask Dana.
The draft's legal review list asks whether "off" on a personal account meets the client's clause, and Dana keeps the unreleased manuals out of every AI until that's answered. The agency's glossary and style procedures go into its pod as skills, which the four translators use in their own Claude. OpenAI doesn't list ChatGPT Plus for custom MCP connectors, so the office manager keeps her own prompts.

Next step: share the instructions, not a login
A personal plan is one person's account, so what a team on personal plans can share is its instructions. AI Skill Pod works with Claude Pro and Max, and with ChatGPT Pro, Business and Enterprise: put the instructions in a shared pod once, and each person on those plans uses them in their own Claude, ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) or Cursor. Share AI skills with your team. Whether team plans train on your data is in Claude Team and ChatGPT Business: is your data used for training?

Questions
Can I use Claude Pro for business?
Anthropic's Consumer Terms, which cover Claude Pro, have no clause against using it for your job, and they assign you Anthropic's rights in the outputs. They also say the account is yours alone, and that your chats can be used for training unless you opt out. Anthropic's help describes Pro as a plan for individual consumers and points teams to Team and Enterprise, which run on the Commercial Terms.
Is Claude Pro safe for business use?
That depends on what you put in it. In the terms, the differences are training and the data processing addendum: Pro chats can train Anthropic's models until you turn model improvement off, and the Consumer Terms include no DPA, while the Commercial Terms say Anthropic may not train on customer content and incorporate a DPA. Check your clients' contracts against that.
Can I use Claude Code with a Pro plan for commercial work?
Claude Code signed in with Free, Pro, Max or Ultra runs on the Consumer Terms, the same as Claude.ai, and Anthropic says those plans' advertised usage limits assume ordinary, individual use. Products built for other people use API keys under the Commercial Terms instead; they may not route their users' requests through personal plan credentials.
Can I use ChatGPT Plus for work?
OpenAI's Terms of Use, which cover Plus, say you own the output and cover use on behalf of a business, with that business indemnifying OpenAI against third-party claims. Content can train OpenAI's models unless you turn off Improve the model for everyone, and the account can't be shared. ChatGPT Business runs on the Services Agreement, which says OpenAI won't use customer content to improve its services unless the customer agrees.
