Claude Team vs Pro: which does a small team need?

Claude Team is worth it for a small team when you need shared projects and skills inside Claude, one company bill, admin control over accounts, or the guarantee that your chats aren't used for training. A standard Team seat costs $25 a month billed monthly or $20 billed yearly, for 2 to 150 people; Pro costs $20 a person billed monthly and is one person's account. If all you want is to share a handful of skills, Pro accounts connected to one shared skill library cost less.

Short answer

  • Choose Team for shared projects, central billing, admin and SSO, and no training by default.
  • Stay on Pro if each person works alone and you only share a few instructions.
  • Price: on yearly billing, a Team seat costs what Pro costs monthly.
  • Mixed AIs or freelancers: Team sharing stops at your Claude organization.

A worked example: a four-person agency

Illustration: a made-up business. A four-person design studio uses Claude daily: proposals, client emails, and summaries of client feedback. Each person has Pro, paid on their own cards. They're weighing Team.

OptionMonthly cost for 4What they get
4 × Pro, monthly$80Four separate accounts, no sharing
Team, monthly billing$100One bill, shared client projects, skills for all
Team, yearly billing$80 ($960 a year up front)The same, for the price of Pro

Their deciding question is the freelance illustrator who works with them on half their projects. She has her own Claude account and can't join their Team without a seat they pay for. If they need her on the same proposal and feedback skills, Team alone doesn't cover it.

How to decide in four questions

  1. Do two or more people work on the same client or project files? Shared projects need Team.
  2. Should the company own the accounts and the bill? Team gives central billing and admin control; with Pro, accounts leave with people.
  3. Does a client or contract require that your data isn't used for training? Team doesn't train on it by default; on Pro each person must opt out.
  4. Does anyone outside Claude need your skills, such as a ChatGPT user or a freelancer on their own account? Team sharing doesn't reach them; plan for that separately.

Two or more yes answers to questions 1 to 3: Team. Mostly no, and you just want the same instructions everywhere: stay on Pro and share skills from one place.

Sharing skills without Team

Every Claude plan can add a custom connector, so Pro and Max users can all connect to one shared skill library and use the same, current version. AI Skill Pod is one such library: Free for up to 3 members and 10 skills, Team at $5 per seat a month from 3 seats, and it also reaches ChatGPT (Pro, Business and Enterprise) and coding agents. Sharing Claude skills without a Team plan walks through it. If you're comparing Team with the larger plan, see Claude Team vs Enterprise.

Questions

What's the difference between Claude Team and Claude Pro?

Pro is one person's account. Team is a shared organization for 2 to 150 people with central billing, shared projects, skills an owner deploys to everyone, admin controls, SSO, and no training on your data by default. A standard Team seat also includes more usage than Pro.

Is Claude Team worth it for a team of three or four?

If you need shared projects, one bill or company-controlled accounts, yes: on yearly billing a standard Team seat costs the same as Pro billed monthly. If you only want to share a few skills or prompts, Pro accounts plus a shared skill library cost less.

Can Pro users share projects or skills with each other?

Not inside Claude. Project and skill sharing work within one Team or Enterprise organization. Pro users can send each other skill files, or connect to the same skill library as a custom connector, which every plan allows.
