Claude skills for product managers: the five to set up first
The Claude skills a product team gets most from are five: a PRD from messy notes, a synthesis of user interviews, a scored backlog, user stories with acceptance criteria, and a roadmap update for stakeholders. Each is a short set of instructions Claude loads when a PM's request matches its description, filled with your templates, your scoring method and one good example of each. Write each once and share it through AI Skill Pod, and every PM, and the engineers and designers who read their documents, get the same version in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) from one invite link.
Short answer
- PRD and user stories: for each feature.
- Interview synthesis: after each round of research.
- Prioritization: at each planning cycle.
- Roadmap update: monthly or quarterly.
The five skills
| Skill | The PM asks | Put in from your team |
|---|---|---|
| PRD from notes | "PRD from these call notes and the Slack thread" | Your template, what counts as evidence, one good PRD |
| Interview synthesis | "Synthesize these six interviews" | Your research questions, how you tag themes, quote rules |
| Prioritization | "Score the backlog for Q1" | Your method, such as RICE, and how you size reach and effort |
| User stories | "Stories for the bulk-invite feature" | Your story format and acceptance criteria style |
| Roadmap update | "Roadmap update for sales" | Now, Next, Later or your own format; what you never promise |
A worked example: a PM's week
Illustration: a made-up business. Ken is the only PM at a 25-person software company that sells scheduling tools to clinics.
- Monday "Synthesize these six interviews." The synthesis skill groups what clinic managers said into four themes with counts and quotes, and flags that two contradict the sales team's assumption.
- Tuesday "PRD for recurring appointments, from the synthesis and last week's call notes." The PRD skill fills the team's template and lists three open questions for engineering.
- Thursday "Roadmap update for sales." The update moves recurring appointments to Next and says plainly what isn't promised for this quarter.
The engineers keep the review skills in the repository; Ken's skills sit in the company's pod, so the designers get them in Claude too.
AI Skill Pod is this site's product. You can start on Free at $0, with no card, for up to 3 people and 10 skills; after the 14-day trial, your team stays on Free unless you buy Team ($5 per seat a month from 3 seats) or Business.
Set them up
- Pick the first skill by what takes you longest each week.
- Gather your template and one good example of the document the skill should produce.
- Write the skill: a name, a description in your own words under 200 characters, the steps and the example.
- Test it on last month's real notes, and compare with what you wrote then.
- Add the next one once the first saves you time without fixing.
Next step: the whole team on the same version
A skill in one PM's Claude helps one PM. Getting PMs, designers and engineers on the same version is a sharing question: the best ways to share AI skills with a team compares the options.
Skills for this
- ProductPRD from messy notesTurns notes, Slack threads, and call notes into a PRD: problem with evidence, goals and non-goals, metrics, must/should/could requirements, and flagged gaps.
- ProductUser interview synthesisSynthesizes interview notes into themes with participant counts, quotes, jobs-to-be-done, insights vs. assumptions, and recommendations with confidence.
- ProductFeature prioritization with RICEScores a backlog with RICE or ICE, shows the math per item, tests sensitivity, recommends a cut line for capacity, and flags dependencies.
- ProductUser stories with acceptance criteriaTurns a feature into user stories with Given/When/Then acceptance criteria, edge cases, out-of-scope notes, and an INVEST check per story.
Questions
What Claude skills should a product manager set up first?
Usually five: a PRD from notes, a user-interview synthesis, backlog prioritization, user stories with acceptance criteria, and a roadmap update. Start with the one that takes you longest each week, often the PRD or the interview synthesis.
Can Claude write a PRD in our team's format?
Yes, with a skill that holds your template, what counts as evidence for a problem, and one PRD your team considers good. Paste the notes, and the skill fills the template and lists what's still missing.
How do engineers and PMs share the same skills?
Engineers can keep skills in the repository's .claude/skills folder, which Claude Code, Cursor and GitHub Copilot read. PMs who don't work in the repository can get the same skills in Claude or ChatGPT through a pod.
AI skill
Have your AI turn messy notes into a PRD
Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. PRD from messy notes has your AI turn messy notes, threads and call notes into a PRD: the problem with its evidence, goals and how you'll measure them, scope in and out, requirements, open questions, and what's still missing.
