GitHub Copilot Business vs Cursor Teams: which fits your dev team

GitHub Copilot Business adds AI to the editors and GitHub your developers already use, priced per seat with AI credits pooled across the organization, while Cursor Teams is a separate editor priced per seat with a weekly allowance for Cursor's own models and a shared balance for other models. Both give admins central billing, policies and agent skills, and both read a repository's .claude/skills folder, so one skill can serve both. For the people who aren't in the repository, such as a contractor or the product team, the same skills can live in AI Skill Pod, which adds them to Cursor and to Claude or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise) from one invite link.

Short answer

  • Copilot Business: AI in your current editors and GitHub.
  • Cursor Teams: its own editor.
  • Usage: pooled credits vs weekly allowances per seat.
  • Skills: both read .claude/skills.

A worked example: one team, one skills folder

Illustration: a made-up business. A 14-developer team is split: ten like their JetBrains IDEs and want Copilot Business, four live in Cursor. The tech lead:

  1. Buys Copilot Business for the ten and Cursor Teams Premium seats for the four, rather than forcing one editor.
  2. Commits the code-review and migration skills to the repository's .claude/skills, which Copilot and Cursor both read, after checking GitHub's Copilot feature matrix for the team's JetBrains version, since support for skills depends on the IDE version.
  3. Puts the release-notes skill in the team's pod, so the product managers, who never open the repository, get it in Claude.

AI Skill Pod is this site's product. You can start on Free at $0, with no card, for up to 3 people and 10 skills; after the 14-day trial, your team stays on Free unless you buy Team ($5 per seat a month from 3 seats) or Business.

Choose in three questions

  1. Which editor will the team keep? Staying in VS Code, Visual Studio or JetBrains points to Copilot; a team happy in Cursor stays there.
  2. How heavy is the agent use? Compare Copilot's pooled credits with Cursor's weekly allowance per seat for the models you use.
  3. Who outside the repository needs the same methods? Keep those skills where everyone's AI can reach them.

Questions

What's the difference between GitHub Copilot Business and Cursor Teams?

Copilot Business adds AI to the editors and GitHub your developers already use, priced per seat with AI credits pooled across the organization. Cursor Teams is a separate editor, priced per seat with a weekly allowance for Cursor's own models and a shared balance for other models. Both offer central admin, policies and agent skills.

Can GitHub Copilot and Cursor use the same skills?

Yes. Both read SKILL.md files from a repository's .claude/skills or .agents/skills folder, so one copy in the repository serves both. For people outside the repository, a pod adds the same skills to Cursor and to Claude or ChatGPT.

What happens to billing when a developer leaves?

On Copilot Business a removed seat is billed to the end of the billing cycle, and the person loses access at once. On Cursor Teams removing the member frees the seat, and reducing seats in billing stops the charge at the end of the period.

Have your AI find the SaaS spend you can cut

Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. SaaS spend review has your AI review your coding tools before you add seats: seats paid against seats used, tools that overlap, usage caps and top-ups, the last day to change before each renewal, and a keep, downgrade or cancel call for each.
