Guide
How to share a ChatGPT plugin with people outside your workspace
You can't share a ChatGPT plugin with people outside your Business workspace: OpenAI's help describes sharing only with teammates whose workspace role allows it, and Pro and personal accounts can't share a Site-hosted plugin at all. To reach a client or freelancer, give them a seat in the workspace, or take the plugin's instructions out of ChatGPT as a skill and share that: as a file, or from a skill library their own AI connects to. Most plugins built from custom GPTs are mostly instructions, so the skill carries most of the value.
Short answer
- Inside the workspace: share or publish the plugin, if your role allows.
- Outside it: a paid seat, or the instructions shared as a skill.
- The skill route works with their own Claude or ChatGPT account.
- Tools and connectors in the plugin don't travel with the instructions; plan them separately.
What ChatGPT allows today
| Account | Share a plugin with |
|---|---|
| Pro and personal accounts | No one, for a Site-hosted plugin |
| Business | Teammates, if your role allows sharing; the workspace directory needs a separate publish permission |
| Enterprise | Teammates; uploading and creating MCP plugins are off by default |
| People outside the workspace | Not described by OpenAI; owners report links fail |
From OpenAI's help articles (read through search-result text) and community forum, 5 November 2026. Recipients also need access to the plugin's Site and complete their own connection. The two OpenAI sources describe different things: its pricing page lists "Create & share Plugins" on Go, Plus and Pro, while its help article says Site-hosted plugins on personal accounts can't be shared. Neither describes sharing with people outside a Business workspace.
A worked example: a consultant and three clients
Illustration: a made-up business. A pricing consultant built a "pricing page review" GPT in her ChatGPT Business workspace and shared it with three clients. In migration it became a plugin, private to her workspace. Her clients use their own ChatGPT and Claude accounts.
- Seats for three clients would cost her a Business seat each, and the clients would juggle two accounts.
- The instructions as a skill: the GPT was 90% instructions (her review checklist, scoring, the report format) and one action that pulled a page's text. She turns the instructions into a skill. The page-fetching action she drops; clients paste the page text.
- One copy for all three: she shares the skill from a library each client connects to from their own AI, and removes each client when the engagement ends.
The client on ChatGPT Plus is the exception: OpenAI doesn't list ChatGPT Plus for custom MCP connectors, so he gets the skill's text to keep in a project.
Move a plugin's instructions out
- Open the plugin or GPT and copy its instructions and the names of its knowledge files.
- List what isn't instructions: actions, connectors, files. Decide for each: drop, replace with a pasted input, or rebuild as a connector.
- Turn the instructions into a skill with a name and a "use when" description.
- Test it in Claude and ChatGPT on three real requests.
- Share one copy people outside your workspace can reach, and set an end date for each person.

Questions
Can I share a ChatGPT plugin with someone outside my Business workspace?
Not directly. OpenAI's help describes sharing with teammates inside the workspace, when your role allows it; owners on OpenAI's forum report that links fail for people outside. Give them a seat, or share the plugin's instructions as a skill outside ChatGPT.
Can I share a plugin from ChatGPT Pro?
Not a Site-hosted one: OpenAI says Pro and personal-account users can't currently share it with other ChatGPT users by invitation or link.
What happens to my clients when my custom GPT becomes a plugin?
The migrated plugin starts private, so clients who used your GPT lose access unless you share again. If they're outside your workspace, plan another route before 11 December 2026.
AI skill
Have your AI turn a prompt that works into a skill your team can reuse
Put this skill in AI Skill Pod and everyone on your team gets it in their Claude, Cursor or ChatGPT (Pro, Business, Enterprise): one invite link, free to start. Turn a prompt into a skill has your AI turn your plugin's instructions into a standalone skill, the part you can hand to people outside the workspace.
